Reading an SDS before you formulate an electrolyte
The 16 section GHS layout appears in both links above. It has more than you need every time. Before mixing a new electrolyte, these are the sections you should read:
- Section 2 on hazard identification and Section 9 on physical and chemical properties: Flash point and autoignition temperature matter. Most aprotic electrolyte solvents like acetonitrile, THF, and carbonates are volatile and flammable. They belong in a fume hood, not on an open bench. See fume hood vs laminar flow.
- Section 10 on stability and reactivity and Section 7 on handling and storage: Water reactivity and incompatibility with air or moisture appear here. This matters if you dry a solvent per Drying Solvents or handle a moisture sensitive salt. LiPF6 type salts hydrolyze to HF. Section 10 will flag this before you find out the hard way.
- Section 3 on composition or ingredients: For a formulated product, check what is actually in it. A supporting electrolyte blend or proprietary solvent mix can hide a second hazardous component. That component changes your PPE or disposal plan.
- Section 8 on exposure controls and PPE: Glove compatibility matters specifically. Nitrile is not universal. Some electrolyte solvents degrade common glove materials quickly enough to matter during a task, not just on paper.
- Section 13 on disposal considerations: Spent non aqueous electrolyte is usually not aqueous waste. Check this before you generate the waste, not after.
- Section 10 again for incompatibilities: Check this before combining two reagents you have not combined before. This section flags dangerous combinations. Sodium metal and wet solvent do not mix.
Reading the whole sheet for anything genuinely new to you always replaces a fast pass. This fast pass only checks whether you are about to do something the SDS already warned you about.
